My Favourite Things to Eat / Drink While Reading | Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

The theme for this week is:

Favourite Things to Eat/Drink While Reading

1. Nothing

Now this probably sounds quite funny and the complete opposite of this week’s prompt, but I only eat/drink whilst I read very occasionally as most of my reading either takes place on the go or in my bed before I’m about to sleep. However just telling you that would probably make for a very boring post so I will divulge what I do eat and drink on the certain occasions that I do.

2. Water

I’m one of those people who never fails to bring a full water bottle wherever they go, which is why water’s made the list. Its either drunk whilst I’m on the go or reading during the day when I can’t bring myself to commit to going downstairs to make myself a cup of tea – either that or I’ve already finished drinking it.

Drinking water is so good for your system and it’s great how refreshed you feel after drinking some – so here’s your daily reminder to go drink water!

3. (Yorkshire) Tea

Tea, the god-tier drink. In my house we religiously drink the brand Yorkshire Tea (with some rare exceptions) therefore when I’m in want of a hot drink it’s my go-to option. Nothing reeks of the British like a good cuppa and I’m not ashamed to say that I drink way too much of it. I also like to drink tea to help me wind down for bed (which probably isn’t good for my caffeine levels) to help me get into the mood for both my reading and (eventually) sleeping.

4. Cake

I tend to not eat whilst I read because I’ve realised I don’t enjoy the food as much when I do (and I hate it when crumbs drop on my books), but that’s not to say I don’t eat right before I read – which does end up happening now and again. Cake, of course, is a great choice for this and my favourites are carrot and chocolate, however (nearly) all cake is good cake, obviously.

5. Cookies

If I’m planning to snack whilst reading then cookies tend to be one of the better options, especially because they don’t get as crumbly when you’re eating them (note: I’m British so I’m using the British terminology – biscuits are the harder ones you buy pre-packaged at the supermarket whereas cookies are the softer ones you tend to bake at home). My favourite cookie has to be white chocolate chip, but the triple chocolate or M&M/Smarties ones are high up on the list too (I’m getting hungry just thinking about them!).

6. Green Tea

Back to the drinks, another option that I tend to reach towards is green tea. For this, I’m definitely not fussy and generally any green tea will do – unless it’s infused with random flavours like apple (okay, maybe I am still rather choosy). In my household we mainly have the loose leaf kind from Hong Kong/China and I pick whichever takes my fancy that day, although if I had to recommend one I’d probably say Dragon Well because I think it’s rather underrated.

7. Popcorn

Ahh yes, yet more snacks. Whilst popcorn dust can be prone to getting on my fingers, it’s so marginal that it’s hardly a sin to read whilst eating it. For flavours it’d have to be either salty or sweet and salty (a combo I still can’t understand but love all the same) and for brands Tesco own-brand is my go-to (it’s a British supermarket if you’re outside of the UK).

8. Toast

If I’m reading around breakfast or lunchtime there’s a good chance that if I’m eating anything it’ll probably be toast. As toast is quite prone to getting bits everywhere I’ll only eat it whilst reading on my phone or kindle (I’ve hacked the system) – I’m also a hardcore butter fan, it’s simple but the best.chocolate coffee pouring in white mug

9. Hot Chocolate

Now this is probably the rarest occurrence out of everything on this list as whilst hot chocolate is the ultimate cosy drink, I pretty much never have it – during Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and after hikes being the exceptions.

10. Whatever

All in all, I’m not fussy when it comes to eating whilst reading so I’m happy with anything – guaranteed I’ll be reading an e-book if I am.

Do you like eating / drinking whilst reading? If so, what are your go-to options?

Nothing and water are great answers. Honestly, I don’t generally eat or drink anything when I’m reading. Most of the books I read are e-books, so I don’t want to get sticky stuff on my laptop or phone.
